DENGUE PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY.

Rio de Janeiro has declared a public health emergency due to a significant outbreak of dengue fever, coinciding with the upcoming Carnival celebrations. Despite the outbreak, Carnival events are expected to proceed as planned. The city has responded by opening 10 care centers, establishing an emergency operations center, allocating hospital beds for dengue patients, and employing “smoke cars” to diffuse insecticide in high-incidence areas. Since the start of 2024, over 10,000 dengue cases have been registered in Rio, nearing half the total cases reported in 2023. The surge in dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection common in tropical climates, is attributed to frequent rains and high temperatures. This outbreak is part of a broader national health crisis, with several Brazilian states, including Acre, Minas Gerais, Goias, and the Federal District, declaring health emergencies. The Brazilian air force has established a 60-bed field hospital in the Federal District to manage the caseload. Dengue symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and nausea, and severe cases can be fatal. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes has emphasized the role of citizens in eliminating mosquito breeding grounds to combat the outbreak. In a groundbreaking move, Brazil approved a dengue vaccine in March 2023, becoming the first country to offer it through its public health system, with plans to vaccinate over 3 million people in 2024. DOES FLOURIDE LOWER IQ?

In San Francisco, a court case challenges the U.S. EPA’s stance on water fluoridation due to potential neurodevelopmental risks. This unprecedented case, started in 2017, debates whether fluoride, added to water since 1946 for dental health, should be regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) due to its possible impact on children’s and fetuses’ brain development. Central to the case is an unpublished National Toxicology Program (NTP) report, suggesting high fluoride levels might lower children’s IQ. This has spurred groups like the Fluoride Action Network to demand fluoride regulation. The trial focuses on the safe threshold of fluoride, with concerns highlighted for infants consuming fluoridated formula. EPA argues the current fluoride level in water is safe. Judge Edward Chen’s decision could influence whether the EPA must reevaluate fluoride under TSCA, considering it a toxic substance without weighing its dental benefits. Cedars-Sinai has developed an app, Xaia, designed for Appleโ€™s new Vision Pro virtual reality headset, introducing an innovative approach to virtual therapy. Trained using transcripts from psychologist-patient interactions, the AI showed empathetic and supportive responses in trials with participants. While some preferred human therapists, all recommended the software, praising the avatar’s friendly, empathic, and intelligent nature. WATER FROM THIN AIR.

Technology companies are reinvigorating an ancient method of extracting water from air, introducing innovations like solar panels that produce water and self-refilling water coolers. At the forefront is Cody Friesen, an Arizona State University associate professor, who developed a solar-powered hydropanel capable of absorbing water vapor in dry conditions. His company, Source Global, operates in over 50 countries with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. These solar panels use sunlight to power fans drawing air into a device with a moisture-absorbing desiccant material. The accumulated water vapor is then converted into liquid, making it drinkable. This technology, surprisingly effective even in low humidity, aims to democratize water access in remote or disaster-stricken areas. Advancements in AI have enhanced these panels’ efficiency, potentially increasing water yield significantly. Friesen envisions this technology even making water available on Mars. Other companies like Kara Water and Rainmaker are also developing air-to-water solutions, showcasing the growing interest and potential in this field. NASA’S LUNAR COMEBACK.

In 2024, NASA will resume lunar science experiments, a first since 1972, utilizing new technologies and public-private partnerships. The initiative includes the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which employs commercial landers for lunar missions. The first launches, Astrobotics and Intuitive Machines, are scheduled for early 2024. A key component of this initiative is the ROLSES program, where I’m a co-investigator. ROLSES, launching with Intuitive Machines, aims to deploy radio telescopes on the Moon by 2026, especially on its far side, an ideal location for radio astronomy due to minimal interference from Earth. The mission’s focus includes studying plasma on the Moonโ€™s surface, caused by solar wind, crucial for understanding astronaut safety. Additionally, it will observe solar and exoplanetary radio emissions to explore magnetic fields and the potential for life on exoplanets. In 2026, the LuSEE-Night mission will study the early universe during its ‘dark ages’ from the Moon’s far side. This mission, a joint effort between NASA and the Department of Energy, aims to explore fundamental aspects of cosmology and physics, providing new insights into the universe’s earliest stages. NO MOVEMENT ON PVC’S.

After a Norfolk Southern train derailment in Ohio released toxic vinyl chloride, sparking a chemical fire, the 2023 Railway Safety Act was introduced to enhance hazardous material transport regulations. Despite increased scrutiny of vinyl chloride, the market for vinyl products, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), continues to grow. Environmental concerns about PVC, a plastic used in various products, are rising due to its harmful components like phthalates and flame retardants. Its production releases greenhouse gases and exposes workers and communities to dangerous chemicals, including PFAS. The vinyl industry, however, is expanding, with major companies investing in PVC operations despite public health threats, particularly in marginalized communities. Increased cancer risks and environmental contamination are significant issues. The Vinyl Institute, representing these companies, is actively lobbying against regulatory efforts and bans on PVC. Internationally, discussions on a Global Plastics Treaty consider PVC bans, but the U.S. has adopted a more business-friendly stance. The Vinyl Institute opposes such bans, citing the importance of PVC in healthcare and clean water, while environmental groups advocate for safer alternatives. AI MAY DECIPHER ANCIENT SCROLLS.

A team of student researchers has revolutionized archaeology by using machine learning to decipher Greek text inside a charred 2,000-year-old scroll from Herculaneum, Italy. The scroll, buried by Mount Vesuvius’s eruption, is part of a library containing intact papyri, the only surviving ancient library. Their work, part of the Vesuvius Challenge, revealed a philosophical work discussing senses and pleasure, hinting at vast potential knowledge about the ancient world. The winning team, from Egypt, Switzerland, and the U.S., received a $700,000 prize for their breakthrough. They utilized machine-learning algorithms trained on high-resolution scans, a task previously deemed impossible due to the scrolls’ fragility and the indistinguishability of ink from papyrus in scans. This achievement, hailed as historic, has excited the field of ancient studies, offering new insights into Greek philosophy and potentially broader subjects in future scrolls. Their success has implications for other hidden texts and fuels debate on further excavations at Herculaneum. KILLER WHALES TRAPPED BETWEEN ICE.

In northern Japan, a pod of killer whales, including calves, is trapped in drift ice off Hokkaido’s coast, raising concerns for their welfare. The situation, occurring near the Shiretoko peninsula, a UNESCO world heritage site, was highlighted by footage showing at least 10 orcas struggling to breathe through a small gap in the ice. Local officials, unable to intervene due to thick ice, hope the whales can escape as the ice breaks up. Marine life expert Seiichiro Tsuchiya, who discovered the pod while studying sea lions, observed the whales, including several calves, in distress. Killer whales typically can’t stay submerged for long periods, heightening the risk in such situations. This incident isn’t the first in the area, known for reduced sea ice in winter due to climate change. In 2005, several killer whales died after being similarly trapped. The Shiretoko peninsula, a key location for observing Arctic sea ice in the lower northern hemisphere, has historical significance, with the ice once spanning vast areas. (The Guardian)
