MONO: “Protection” by Massive Attack.

Think you know a song — old or new — that deserves a shout? Send us your suggestions and why the songs are hot. We’ll post it on the site for the world to read.

THE SONG: Protection.

WHO: Massive Attack.

WHY IT’S HOT: A classic track from British Trip-Hop pioneers off their album Protection. The music is so mellow and laid back and Tracey Thorn’s vocals are restrained and gorgeous as usual. According to U Discover Music, “‘We wanted to make a soul record, but in our own way,’ Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja told Melody Maker just before the album’s release. ‘So rather than getting in another diva to replace Shara (Nelson), we got in touch with Tracy, ‘cos her intimate way of writing really appealed to us.”

Protection was also the band’s last album to feature Tricky as a member.

WANT MORE? “Inertia Creeps” off the album, Mezzanine.

WORDS: brice.
