THE SONG: Nautilus.
WHO: Bob James.
WHY IT’S HOT: Renowned US jazz musician, keyboard player, arranger, and producer Bob James needs to be in the Hip Hop Hall Of Fame. Outside of James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic, you can argue that Mr. James is one of Hip Hop’s most sampled musicians.
The eerie and hypnotic track “Nautilus” off of his 1974 “One” LP is so layered, intricate, and smooth you can see why early hip-hop producers were drawn to the plethora of sounds and grooves on it.
Take a listen and see if you can figure out how many of your favorite MCs flipped this record.
WANT MORE? Another classic breakbeat by Bob James on “Welcome To The Mardi Gras”.
WORDS: Greg Cee.
