THE SONG: Que Pasa/Mi No Pop I.
WHO: Kid Creole and the Coconuts
WHY IT’S HOT: Kid Creole and The Coconuts don’t get enough credit for their incomparable artistry via the genre-bending tunes they cranked out in their heyday. Darnell August and his bandmates combined tongue-in-cheek lyrics and sassy vocal arrangements with the best parts of salsa, world beat, funk, and rap at an alarmingly high clip. “Que Pasa/Mi No Pop I”, which was featured in the seminal art flick “Downtown 81” is a perfect showcase for their talent. If you’re not dancing after the first few seconds, you need some spinach.
WANT MORE?: More Kid Creole and the Coconuts insanity with “I’m a Wonderful Thing Baby”.
