MONO: “Seize the Day (Feat. Phoebe Bridgers)” by Paul McCartney.

THE SONG: Seize the Day.

WHO: Paul McCartney feat. Phoebe Bridgers.

WHY IT’S HOT: When I first heard this, I recognized Phoebe Bridgers’ voice (she’s had a massive year so that was pretty easy). I didn’t know it was a Macca song but the internal rhythms in the lyrics were so identifiable that I checked the track. Sure enough, there he was. Paul McCartney. What I find fascinating about this sort-of-cover is that having different voice singing his new songs actually makes them sound really, really current. Bridgers actually brings a lot to this track. The music works as well. The song is hers… until you close your eyes and listen to the song’s cadences. Then you know it’s Macca’s.

WANT MORE? Check out Paul McCartney’s version. It works slightly less. It’s a bit, um, conventional. His voice has so much historical baggage that it almost works against him in a lot of cases.

WORDS: brice.
