The bells contained different clappers—including copper, stone, shell and colorful minerals—meaning groups of them would have produced distinct metallic tones when shaken. Researchers argue they functioned as musical instruments associated with agricultural fertility, harvest ceremonies and abundance rather than simply decoration. Chemical analysis indicates the bells were primarily copper with tin and trace metals. Victorian Shipwreck Beer Could Revive Lost Yeast: A sealed bottle of Guinness recovered from the wreck of the Mindoro, which sank in the English Channel in 1864, may offer scientists an unusual biological time capsule. Divers discovered the roughly 162-year-old bottle among crates exposed as shifting seabed sediments revealed new portions of the wreck. Researchers at KU Leuven plan to analyze the beer, including attempting to sequence DNA from its brewing yeast. The original organisms may no longer be alive, but surviving genetic material could identify where the Victorian strain fits on the yeast family tree and allow researchers to find close modern relatives.
