Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) top forward, Neymar Jr, will miss the rest of the season due to a scheduled surgery for his injured ankle. The Brazilian rolled his right ankle during PSG’s win against Lille on February 19, which had kept him out of Brazil’s World Cup campaign for a while. PSG’s medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid the risk of recurrence, as Neymar had experienced instability in his ankle in the past. The club estimates that the 31-year-old will need three to four months of recovery time before returning to team training.

This injury is not the first time Neymar has faced issues with his right ankle, having previously missed significant time in 2021 and during Brazil’s 2019 Copa América winning campaign. Despite this, Neymar has already been a productive player for PSG, with 18 goals and 17 assists in just 29 matches across all competitions.

Repeated ankle sprains can cause damage to the ligaments in several ways. Each time the ankle twists or turns beyond its normal range of motion, it puts stress on the ligaments that hold the ankle joint together. Over time, this stress can lead to micro-tears in the ligaments, weakening their structure and reducing their ability to support the joint.

As the ligaments become weaker, they are more likely to stretch or tear with each subsequent sprain. This can create a cycle of chronic ankle instability, where the ankle becomes increasingly prone to sprains and the ligaments become increasingly damaged.

Repeated ankle sprains can also cause scar tissue to form in the ligaments, which can further weaken their structure and limit their flexibility. Scar tissue can also make it more difficult for the ligaments to heal properly after each sprain, increasing the risk of chronic instability.

In severe cases, repeated ankle sprains can lead to a complete rupture of the ligaments, which may require surgical intervention to repair. It is therefore important to seek medical attention for any ankle sprains, particularly if they are recurring, to prevent further damage and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

The general recovery time for ankle ligament surgery can vary depending on the type and severity of the injury, as well as the specific surgical technique used. In most cases, the initial recovery period after ankle ligament surgery lasts approximately 6 to 12 weeks.

During this time, patients typically wear a protective boot or brace and use crutches to keep weight off the affected ankle. Physical therapy may also be prescribed to help regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the ankle.

After the initial recovery period, patients may gradually begin to bear weight on the affected ankle and transition to regular activities. However, it may take several months before the ankle is fully healed and able to withstand high-impact activities like running and jumping.

Overall, the full recovery time for ankle ligament surgery can range from several months to up to a year, depending on the extent of the injury and the individual’s progress during rehabilitation.

PSG faces a tough challenge in the Champions League as they attempt to overcome a 1-0 deficit in the first leg against Bayern Munich. However, they hold an eight-point lead over Marseille in Ligue 1 as they strive for their 11th French championship. Although Neymar’s absence is a significant loss, PSG will be determined to continue their success without him.
