THE SONG: The Numbers (Live).
WHO: Jonny Greenwood, Thom Yorke, and a CR78.
WHY IT’S HOT: This live performance of “The Numbers” reminds me of something I once read about the Beatles. When it seems they’re at their most experimental, they’re actually at their most conservative. The studio version of this track on A Moon Shaped Pool is more abstract than this performance. Yet the backbone of Greenwood’s guitar work is still there and the influence of the blues (rock’s backbone) is undeniable. This stripped down version (naked?) is more direct and maybe even a little bit more honest. Either way, I prefer this version to the polished one. Of course, Radiohead is revered for their live performances which often surpass their album versions.
WANT MORE? More live Radiohead. This time it’s Glasto 2003.
