THE SONG: Fade to Grey.
WHO: Visage.
WHY IT’S HOT: The second single from the New Romantic studio-band Visage was also their highest charting. The band’s frontman Steve Strange was a central piece in creating the look made famous by the likes of Boy George and Bannanarama. The movement originated in London clubs like the Blitz and Fade to Grey’s dance music roots is on full display. When this song dropped in 1980, synth-driven dance music hadn’t saturated the market yet and was still relatively novel. For reference, the Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder masterpiece, I Feel Love, came out in 1977. This song definitely sports some of that early Euro-tech sensibility.
WANT MORE? After Visage, Midge Ure went on to join the band Ultravoxx. This was one of their biggest hits.
WORDS: brice.
