We’re back with another installation of 50 States of Science. This week SCINQ is taking a closer look at Reno, Nevada’s wonderful science museum, The Discovery.

NUTSHELL: If youโ€™re ever in Reno, Nevada, and looking for a spot thatโ€™s both fun and educational, you have to check out The Discovery science museum. Itโ€™s a fantastic place for curious minds of all ages, packed with interactive exhibits and hands-on activities that make learning a blast. From exploring the wonders of space and robotics to diving into the intricacies of the human body and natural world, The Discovery offers a range of experiences that spark imagination and creativity. Whether youโ€™re a kid or just a kid at heart, this museum is a must-visit destination for anyone eager to discover the marvels of science in a playful, engaging environment.

NOW SHOWING: The “Mental Health: Mind Matters” exhibition at The Discovery in Reno explores mental health through interactive, multimedia activities that engage visitors of all ages. The exhibit aims to raise awareness and understanding of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It highlights historical treatments and provides insights into living with mental illness. The exhibition is available until September 8, 2024, and is presented in multiple languages.

COMING SOON: Starting in May 2025, the “Super Human: Power of Technology” exhibition at The Discovery in Reno focuses on the intersection of human abilities and technology, highlighting breakthroughs inspired by the natural world. The exhibit features 23 hands-on and full-body experiences, allowing visitors to explore enhancements like exoskeletons, mind-controlled computers, and aerodynamics in a wind tunnel. This exhibition is set to run until September 2025.

GEOGRAPHY: The “Truckee Connects” exhibition at The Discovery in Reno is an interactive, educational display that represents the Truckee River watershed, from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Visitors can learn about the various uses of water, including recreation, irrigation, hydroelectric power, and wildlife habitats. The exhibition allows guests to experiment with water and explore its significance in the region.

DATE NIGHT: The “Chemistry of the Cocktail” is The Discoveryโ€™s annual fundraising event, scheduled for Friday, November 8, 2024. Attendees can explore the science of mixology, enjoy food from local culinary spots, participate in a silent auction, and attend hands-on labs, all while exploring the museum. The goal is to raise $100,000 in one night to support The Discoveryโ€™s mission to inspire scientific curiosity. Tickets went on sale on August 1, 2024.
