Jury still out: Oral immunotherapy for peanut allergies has shown some promise but has also been shown to cause more severe reactions for those whom the therapy did not work. According to Alkis Togias, the branch chief of allergy, asthma, and airway biology at the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the data show the intervention is at an early stage. “From our perspective as an agency that is responsible for research in the field, what it tells us is that we need to improve on the methods for treating food allergy, especially peanut allergy.” http://bit.ly/2GUqakE
Criminal startup: The FBI has raided the San Francisco offices of uBiome, a biotech diagnostics company. They believe the company to be guilty of billing insurance companies fraudulent charges. He startup’s “at-home offerings include Explorer, for gut wellness, food and lifestyle; SmartGut, a stool test aimed at chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis; and the women’s health test SmartJane, which detects sexually transmitted infections, strains of HPV and different types of vaginal microbes.” http://bit.ly/2GS5ARV
